Quick Shears

Longneck Roughneck Des Cook Memorial Quick Shears

The Longneck Roughneck Des Cook Memorial Quick Shears is an annual event held in Kulin, with the objective of raising the profile of the shearing and agricultural industry by providing an event that encourages participation in all aspects of shearing.

The event is in memory of Des Cook, who was an integral part of the shearing industry from a shearer to shed hand to farmer, presser, contractor and industry representative. The event is proud to honour this man, who was tragically killed.

The Longneck Roughneck Des Cook Memorial Quick Shears comprises of four events:

EventRequirements
OpenEntrant must have shorn over 200 sheep in a day
IntermediateEntrant to have shorn between 100-200 sheep in a day
NoviceFor shearers who are learning and anyone who would like to have a go
TeamsTwo shearers per team of any standard

Competitors in each of the individual events (open, intermediate and novice) compete by shearing one sheep as quickly and cleanly as possible. Judges assess each shorn sheep for accuracy of shearing. Those deemed to be unsatisfactorily shorn are disqualified. Those satisfactorily shorn sheep are passed and the winner is then based on the time taken to shear the sheep. A final is held for the open and intermediate events.
