Mr Felix Stanley Freebairn
Mr Felix Stanley Freebairn
Felix Stanley (Phil) Freebairn, was born 22 December 1902 at Georgetown, SA. Phil came to WA in 1924 and purchased an established farm at Jilakin Rocks (Kulin). While devoted to farm life Phil found time to help in the development of the district. In addition to his civic duties Phil was a keen sportsman. So great was Phil's esteem for the town of Kulin and his love of sport that he bequeathed his estate to the Shire of Kulin. The Freebairn Estate is a legacy in Kulin and has provided funding for excellent sporting facilities to be established in Kulin.
Felix was a Councillor with the Shire of Kulin (formerly the Kulin Road Board) from 1946-1961 and within this time he held the position of Chairman (1949-1951).
Mr Freebairn bequeathed funds to the Shire of Kulin. These funds, known as Freebairn Estate, were given to the Shire to be used within the Kulin townsite for the betterment of sport and recreation. The bequeathed funds, controlled by the Shire of Kulin have enabled many sport and recreation projects that are very beneficial to the residents of Kulin, to be organised.
The funds have enabled the Shire of Kulin to provide the Freebairn Sports Foundation. The purpose of the Foundation is to make scholarships available to Kulin residents who achieve a State or International level in their chosen sport or recreation activity. The funds have also contributed to the purchase of the 183m slide, which is located at the Kulin Memorial Swimming Pool. Without the foresight and bequethment of funds by Mr Freebairn, the Shire of Kulin would not have been able to provide these wonderful facilities. Apart from these major projects, other minor projects have also benefited from funding through the Freebairn Estate.
