Industry Profile

Agriculture is the dominant economic activity in the Shire, with other industries existing largely to service this sector. Wheat is the favoured crop. Other grains produced include oats, barley, lupins, and canola. Other agricultural pursuits in the Shire include the farming of sheep for meat and wool, pigs and cattle.

In 1998 the total agricultural production in the Shire of Kulin was valued at $70.2 million, or 1.6% of the State’s total agricultural production by value. Oil mallees, which are primarily used for eucalyptus oil production, are planted by many farmers in the Shire of Kulin. Predominately used to combat salinity and waterlogging, oil mallees have developed as a viable source of alternative income for Wheatbelt farmers. Wholesale and retail, agricultural services and finance, property and business services make up 58% of the businesses surveyed. The core operation of these businesses is providing products and services to the agricultural industry, with their sub-operations providing additional products and services to the community such as hardware, drapery, giftware, groceries, and clothing. 86% of businesses are locally owned which provides a stronger and more stable local economy due to the fact that local owners live and run a business in the town.

Operating a Business in Kulin

The Kulin business community is stable indicating that the majority of businesses that begin operations will continue to have a long life of business. 50% of businesses have been operating in the community for longer than ten years.

A high degree of new business is continually opening in Kulin. A very large percentage of new business will continue operation in the community after it's first year. This new businesses continues to add products and services to the existing stable core range of products and services offered.
